Winston Warren Smith, 38, is facing multiple attempted murder charges following an incident on Sunday night that was reported at the Paradise Bar and Lounge on Great Mills Road, officials say.

The preliminary investigation determined that Smith and his victim got into an argument that escalated into a physical altercation that resulted in the 64-year-old being stabbed multiple times.

He had to be airlifted by a Maryland State Police helicopter to an area hospital for treatment and evaluation of his stab wounds, where he was listed in stable condition on Monday morning.

The Lexington Park resident was identified by witnesses and fled the scene following the stabbing, investigators say. He was later tracked down during a traffic stop, he was arrested, and charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, as well as second-degree assault.

Smith is being held at the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown.
